Abstract:
While France and Poland share a historically rich heritage of strategic cooperation, their military relations have significantly deteriorated over the past decade due to mistrust and misunderstandings. However, since 2019, there has been a gradual revival of political dialogue, culminating in the signing of a new cooperation programme (2020-2023) as part of the Franco-Polish strategic partnership. The tensions between the two nations were reignited by Russia’s attack on Ukraine in February 2022, with French attempts at mediating with Russia being met with disapproval from Poland. Presently, Poland and France stand as allies within NATO, providing their support to Ukraine. Looking ahead to 2024, the transition in the Polish government, the evolution of the conflict in Ukraine, and broader global changes may provide new perspectives on the strategic relationship between Poland and France.
