In the latter half of the nineteenth century, the coastal town of La Ciotat, in the French Mediterranean, underwent a profound and rapid transformation. The transition from sail to steam power in shipping had a decisive impact on the town, fundamentally reshaping its economic foundations and social fabric. At the heart of this transition was the Compagnie des Messageries Maritimes, France’s largest steamship company subsidized by the state. Founded in 1851, the company established in La Ciotat its shipbuilding center, responsible for the construction, repair and maintenance of the Company’s fleet, while also serving as a training centre for the technical personnel aboard its ships. As a result, the town shifted towards an industrial hub, emerging as one of the Mediterranean’s premier industrial shipbuilding centers.

This presentation offers a comprehensive overview of the methodologies employed to explore the transformation process of La Ciotat’s maritime society. The analysis will focus on the databases constructed for this research drawing from three primary sources: the nominative lists of the inhabitants of La Ciotat, the seamen registers in La Ciotat the second half of nineteenth century, and the registers of workforce entries in the shipyards of Messageries Maritimes from 1851 to 1911. The data of those sources were elaborated in the framework of the ERC research project SeaLiT: Seafaring Lives in Transition, Mediterranean Maritime Labour and Shipping, 1850s-1920s. Additionally, it will unveil the key results and insights derived, shedding light on the profound social impact of this transition.
